WW: I was writing songs, and writing songs with Old Crow and then when I split from those guys, I felt like it was absolutely necessary, that if I was going to be a solo artist, that I would probably be called something like a singer-songwriter and so, singer/songwriter seemed like it was really important, and I was feeling a lot of pressure about writing really good songs and having an impact on people and I was working at it real hard. What was your thought process behind starting your solo career with old, traditional songs? MD: The album that you’ve got out, which came out like a year and a half ago now, I guess – the Folk Singer, Volume One – that was pretty much old tunes like Midnight Special and Stewball, and all that.

Looking forward to spending some good quality time on the road, in the van, with Josh. We’ve had a lot of mutual friends over the years, and I’ve always heard a lot about him. I think I may have met him a few times, or once – I don’t even really know – but we’ve never spent too much time together. I look forward to spending some time with him. MD: So, maybe the two of you can compare notes He’s been a session guy, and a backing guy and now he’s heading out on his own as well. MD: I think it’s interesting, because you’re going to be appearing with Josh Hedley and he’s kind of coming from a similar place. But since I figured it out – and it didn’t take me too long – it’s really great.

It took me a while to figure out exactly how to do it, and what sort of songs to sing, and how to sort of back myself up, how to fill in the space between singing, and make it work.

I’d never really been a solo performer before I mean, I’d done it a few times around town for a friend’s shows, and I would sit in and do a song here once in a while, but never done a full show like that so, it took a little figuring out.

WW: It’s great! When I first split from the band, it was a little bit intimidating. WW: Yep, very much a solo performer these days. MD: So, things have changed in the interim: You’re out on your own. WW: Yeah, that would have been about, probably, seven years ago. MD: I assume that the last time you were here was probably with Old Crow Medicine Show is that right? WW: Yep, just sort of laying the ground work for The Machine and now, since I was touring over there with The Machine, we figured it would be a really good time for me to get over there and do some solo shows that momentum. The two of them came over to New Zealand, but then I think the rest of you joined up in Australia. I know Gil and Dave had been over there just before the band came over.
